Drivers report vehicle problems after refueling at a Berkeley County gas station

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – Motorists who filled up at a gas station along Interstate 26 this week experienced problems with their vehicles after a reported cross-contamination incident.

The Spinx supermarket at 845 Jedburg Road near I-26 sold 87 unleaded gasoline that was cross-contaminated, according to the South Carolina Department of Agriculture.

After the department received a complaint about gasoline problems, it sent an inspector to Spinx #364 and found that the octane rating of the unleaded gasoline did not meet standards.

Several people reported having problems with their vehicles after refueling at Spinx.

Kia Craig said her husband stopped by the gas station on Friday to fill up the tank before dropping the kids off at school, and now their car won’t start at all.

“We have four boys. School is starting again. My husband doesn’t have a car anymore. We only have one car. It’s a total inconvenience,” Craig said.

The state Department of Agriculture has imposed a freeze on the sale of regular gasoline at the station, meaning it cannot be dispensed until another test is done and the results show the problem has been resolved.

Spinx’s corporate headquarters confirmed the cross-contamination. Anyone who received fuel and is now having problems with their vehicle should call the company’s Greenville headquarters at 864-233-5421.

Spinx had no timeline for when the problem would be resolved.
