After this weekend, there will be no more doughnut breakfast sandwiches and doughnut sundaes with ice cream in Wisconsin’s capital.

Duck Donuts — the North Carolina-based doughnut shop franchise known for these and other unique menu offerings like build-your-own doughnuts — is opening its first Wisconsin store near the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Saturday. The highly anticipated store will be located at 3308 University Ave. on the ground floor of the Boulevard Apartments.

Doors will open at 6 a.m. on Aug. 17, and the first guest in line will receive a dozen free doughnuts each month for a year, the company said. The next 50 guests will receive a “Sprinkling Happiness Package” — two dozen doughnuts and a bucket of coffee that can be redeemed on a subsequent visit.

Duck Donuts first announced last summer that partners had signed on for the Madison store. The new store is owned and operated by Mark and Amanda Kienbaum and Dave Crain.

“My family’s first experience with Duck Donuts was while on vacation in Myrtle Beach in August 2022 when we were looking for a tasty breakfast treat for my daughters. Since then, we have been on a mission to bring these warm, delicious, made-to-order donuts to Madison,” Mark Kienbaum said in a statement.

Duck Donuts was founded in 2007 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Today, the company has over 150 stores in 25 states and international locations in Thailand, Canada, Qatar, Pakistan, the Philippines and Egypt. There are currently four locations in the Chicago area and surrounding areas, with the closest location in Libertyville, Illinois, just under an hour from Milwaukee.

The franchise’s eccentric menu items include the peanut butter and raspberry jelly doughnut, the chocolate caramel crunch doughnut with chocolate glaze, peanuts and salted caramel topping, and a maple glazed doughnut with chopped bacon. Duck Donuts is also known for its doughnut breakfast sandwiches – with bacon, egg and cheese between two plain doughnuts – and doughnut sundaes: warm pastries with a scoop of ice cream.

Customers can also customize their own donuts, choosing from a wide selection of glazes, coatings, toppings and garnishes.

Duck Donuts Madison partners with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin through their Quack Gives Back donation program, which partners with local community groups, nonprofits and fundraising teams. Guests can support the cause by donating at checkout or purchasing a special edition Wish Rubber Duck.

The Madison Donut Shop serves freshly made donuts seven days a week. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information and updates – including specials and donut topping news – visit the Duck Donuts Madison Facebook page or website.
