On Thursday morning, an earthquake was widely felt in the Los Angeles area.

The US Geological Survey reported a preliminary 4.7 magnitude quake with an epicenter 7 kilometers north of Malibu. The quake occurred about 11 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, the USGS said.

The shaking was felt as far away as 45 miles (72 kilometers) in Orange County, where some people reported lights shaking and other objects moving in their homes.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said firefighters were monitoring the city. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services said it was actively monitoring the earthquake and looking for possible damage. The area has seen several quakes this year. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake in August was felt from the Los Angeles area to San Diego, causing buildings to shake, dishes to rattle and car alarms to set off.

Rene Vasquez, manager of The Country Kitchen breakfast restaurant in Malibu, said the quake lasted only a few seconds and kitchen staff went outside as a precaution, but no damage was caused.

“It wasn’t that bad,” Vasquez said. “Thank God nothing fell down.”

People posted on social media that they woke up with a jolt early Wednesday morning, including several celebrities who posted on X.

Paris Hilton wrote on X “This #earthquake was scary.”

Khloe Kardashian posted: “Damn that was a big deal.”

The earthquake struck as the region east of Los Angeles was battling three major wildfires that had burned dozens of homes and forced thousands to evacuate. The fires broke out during a scorching heat wave that has just subsided.
