El Paso Airport receives .6 million grant to renovate facility

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso International Airport (ELP) received a $10.6 million grant as part of a $427 million Biden-Harris administration initiative to improve airport infrastructure statewide, the city said in a press release.

The grant was funded under the bipartisan Airport Infrastructure Grants Act for fiscal year 2024, according to the city.

“We are very pleased to receive this important grant that will ensure El Paso International Airport continues to meet the highest safety and efficiency standards,” said Mayor Oscar Leeser. “This investment underscores our commitment to maintaining a world-class infrastructure that supports both our general aviation and commercial operations.”

According to the city, the grant will be used to renovate the runway pavement at ELP General Aviation, which has not undergone major repairs in over 30 years.

In addition, according to the city, the project will improve safety and efficiency for airport users and aircraft by improving drainage and reducing the risk of foreign objects.

“As the only member of Congress from our Texas region to vote for the bipartisan infrastructure bill, I am thrilled to see this funding for critical airport improvements,” said U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar, a Democrat from Texas. “House Democrats are committed to repairing crumbling infrastructure and investing in our future, and the millions of dollars in federal funding allocated to our airport is a clear reflection of our commitment. As our community grows and our airport continues to welcome more passengers, these funds will go a long way toward improving efficiency and preparing its infrastructure for success in the years to come.”

The project will be completed in three phases, with the first phase of construction expected to begin in fiscal year 2025. Phase one will renovate approximately 13,000 square feet of sidewalks around the taxi lane and tarmac areas, according to the city.
