Elders Aid could use some help

Elder Help of North Idaho is hoping for a little support to keep its firewood program alive.

The nonprofit is losing its 5-acre site in Hayden, where it has processed hundreds of fathoms of firewood annually for the past four years.

“We will no longer be able to serve the more than 150 people who have relied on us to deliver firewood,” said President John Corcoran.

About half of these are given free to eligible seniors to help them survive the winter months. The rest are sold to customers.

Corcoran said they hope to find a few acres of land in Kootenai County where they can store lumber and equipment by Sept. 30.

“We provide everything we need,” he said. “We keep the property clean and tidy.”

Elder Help also recently eliminated the need for two trucks and donated one of them, a 1997 Ford F-250, to a local resident for transportation to her job.

“We knew a woman who had to work but needed rides to get to her job every day,” Corcoran said. “Often she couldn’t get a ride and lost a day’s pay.”

Elder Help of North Idaho has been assisting seniors in Kootenai County with free home repairs, ramps, and free firewood since 2005.
