Election 2024: Harris and Walz plan new campaign tour in swing states

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris is planning a four-day Election campaign trip through the most important swing states after the election of the Democrats Debate Tuesday with Republican Donald Trump.

Her “New Way Forward” tour will include a new television ad, rallies, door-to-door campaign events and programs targeting key voting groups, the campaign said Sunday. The tour will culminate with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 15.

In a tight race against the former president, the Harris team sees itself as being able to persuade voters before focusing more on turnout when early voting begins ahead of the Nov. 5 election. Trump has also stepped up his outreach efforts with rallies and interviews in seemingly friendly forums.

The period after the debate in Philadelphia marks the beginning of an aggressive final spurt in a dramatic race.

“Our campaign will bring the vice president’s message directly to voters wherever they are – on the air, at the door and online,” said Michael Tyler, the campaign’s communications director. “With so much at stake in this election, we’re storming the battlegrounds and giving it our all.”

Trump, who was campaigning in Wisconsin on Saturday, published on social media that “if” he wins, anyone he believes was involved in “unconscionable acts” related to the election “will be tracked down, caught and prosecuted on a scale that has unfortunately never been seen before in our country.”

Following the debate, political leaders will commemorate the anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001 on Wednesday.

Harris kicks off her tour in North Carolina on Thursday and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will be in Michigan. Harris will return to Pennsylvania on Friday while Walz is in Michigan and Wisconsin.

The candidates’ spouses will also be participating in the tour. Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband, will travel to Nevada, Arizona and Florida. Gwen Walz will be in Georgia, New Hampshire and Maine.

Further details to follow.

Harris’ campaign will air a new television ad highlighting her plans to cut taxes for the middle class, limit drug prices and address the housing shortage. The ads are part of a larger $370 million media investment and will be tailored on a state-by-state basis to voters in Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Nebraska.
