Elizabeth Olsen says Marvel abused Scarlet Witch

Elizabeth Olsen is open to reviving Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but only if there’s a way to use the character well. The actress hasn’t appeared in the MCU since 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which saw Wanda become a full-blown villain and the character end up being crushed under a collapsed building. Her fate is unknown, and neither Olsen nor Marvel have yet announced when Scarlet Witch will reappear.

“It’s a character I’m happy to return to if there’s an opportunity to use it well, and I think I was lucky that I was used well to begin with,” Olsen said in a recent interview with FM104 (via Collider). “I think people didn’t know what to do with me for a second. … If there’s a good opportunity to use it, I’m always happy to come back.”

In interviews following the release of the Doctor Strange sequel, Olsen made no secret of her surprise that Marvel was taking Scarlet Witch in such a villainous direction. The Emmy nominee said she struggled with the jump from WandaVision, the Disney+ series where Scarlet Witch became a more vulnerable and fully fleshed-out character, to Multiverse of Madness, where she became a complete villain.

“I think I was nervous and torn at first because I hadn’t finished ‘WandaVision’ yet, but we were almost finished,” Olsen said. diversity after the sequel’s release about how to become a villain. “And I thought, ‘Oh my God, how do I put all this together?’ We did it, I did it. And it became an incredible opportunity to have people buy into and empathize with this woman in ‘WandaVision,’ and then, you know, manipulate them into this movie where they’re on her side and then they’re torn themselves.”

During a conversation last year with “The White Lotus” star Meghann Fahy as part of diversity In the series “Actors on Actors,” when asked by Fahy if she missed playing the Marvel character, Olsen honestly admitted that she does not miss her time on Scarlet Witch.

“No, I don’t,” Olsen replied. “I’ve been playing her for almost ten years now. And I’ve loved it. And I think the reason I don’t call Kevin Feige every day with ideas is because I’m really proud of what we’ve done. I think WandaVision was a really surprising opportunity.”

Olsen added, “If someone told me I was getting fired from the Marvel movies, I would be proud of what we did. And I’m really just trying to figure out how to incorporate other movies and characters so it’s less about Marvel.”

It remains to be seen whether Scarlet Witch will return to the MCU, but Feige himself has expressed interest in having the character back on screen.

“There really is so much more to discover,” said Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, once diversity. “We haven’t touched on many of her core storylines from the comics. I would work with Lizzie for another 100 years if we could. In the multiverse, anything is possible! We’ll see.”
