Sept. 21 (UPI) – Billionaire Elon Musk has decided to comply with court orders in Brazil to lift the ban on his social media platform X in the Latin American country.

On Saturday, Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes said the company had not submitted the required documentation proving that it had appointed Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its Brazilian representative. The company was given five days to submit documents confirming her appointment.

The judge also granted the clerk 48 hours to verify that previous orders have been followed. The court will then decide whether to reinstate X to his post.

The ban began on August 30th.

The company said on Friday that it was complying with further orders.

The company, formerly known as Twitter, also told the court that it had blocked accounts suspected of spreading hate speech and false news, two sources told Bloomberg.

Musk, who also owns SpaceX and Tesla, expressed his outrage at the ban.

“Free speech is the foundation of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political reasons,” Musk posted on X on August 30.

Moraes initiated criminal proceedings against Musk, accusing him of spreading false information.

On Thursday, the platform suddenly became accessible to Brazilian users after an automatic update changed the way data was forwarded, the Association of Brazilian Internet Providers said.

Moraes ordered X to restore the ban on its website or face a fine of $907,000 a day, accusing the company of attempting to “disobediently” comply with the court.

About 40 million of Brazil’s 215 million inhabitants used X, which has more than 550 million users every month.

Brazil also has around 250,000 Starlink subscribers and is popular among the country’s rural population and indigenous tribes in the Amazon region.

Brazil last week withdrew $3 million from local bank accounts belonging to X and satellite internet provider Starlink to pay fines imposed by the Supreme Court.

“If the Brazilian government does not return the illegally seized property of X and SpaceX, we will seek the seizure of government assets in return. Hopefully Lula will enjoy the scheduled flight.” Musk wrote on September 2nd
