Travis Head scored an unbeaten 154 and Marnus Labuschagne contributed 77 as Australia successfully achieved an impressive 316-run target and defeated England by seven wickets in the first of five matches of the One Day International series at Trent Bridge.

Australia reached 317-3 with a six-over lead after bowling out England for 315 in 49.4 overs.

For last year’s world champions, it was the 13th consecutive ODI victory and the sixth against England, despite being forced to field a decimated team due to illness in the training camp and injuries.

Head’s highest ODI score, which came off 129 balls, 20 fours and five sixes, was ably supported by Labuschagne, who had also previously proved to be a key player in containing England’s strong start to the competition.

Travis Head makes England pay with an outstanding century in Australia’s seven-wicket victory

England gave away a lead by succumbing to spin before Travis Head took advantage of his loss on six to score an unbeaten century and help Australia to a seven-wicket victory.

From 213 for two in the 33rd over, thanks to Ben Duckett’s 95 from 91 deliveries and Will Jacks’ 62 from 56, England collapsed to 315 with two balls unused in the first of five ODIs at Trent Bridge.

A score of over 350 was lost when nine wickets fell to spin and while it is understandable that Adam Zampa took three for 49 in his 100th ODI, England may rue part-timer Marnus Labuschagne bagging three scalps.

They might have had enough left on the board when Head went airborne early, but Carse was too far from the boundary and failed to capitalise on a devilishly difficult one-handed chance over his head.

The Australian World Cup final hero didn’t need a second invitation, hitting 20 fours and five sixes to take his best ODI score to 154 runs off 129 balls. Labuschagne contributed an unbeaten 77 runs to an unbroken 148-run stand with Head to guide the tourists home with a six-over lead.

Speaking to Sky, Brook said England had “done everything we promised.”

“We went out and scored quickly and when we came out to bowl we tried to take wickets but today was not our day, hopefully this can be the next one.”

“We wanted to score high, but it was difficult in the middle and in keeping the pitch.

“We ended up with a below-average score.

“I felt good out there myself, Jacks played well. It’s a long series and hopefully we can carry this momentum.”

Harry Brook spoke to the BBC after the game and said that “it probably went wrong on the coin toss when I was batting first”.

“It was a cracker. A tough night, but we’re making progress. It’s a five-game series and there are four more to go.

“Last night I first considered bowling, but then changed my mind 20 minutes before the coin toss. Hindsight is a beautiful thing. You can’t think about it too much.

“We probably didn’t rotate the spin well enough in the middle phase. That’s something I’m working on personally. There were too many dot balls in the middle phase. I felt we were in a good position at halftime. Under the lights, it got better at the end and they were able to hit the ball through more easily.”

Ricky Ponting also commented on Sky and called it a “very comprehensive chase”.

“Australia will be very happy with the way Travis played, with neither (Mitchell) Starc nor (Josh) Hazelwood in the game.

“I think they did a good job. Marsh did a really good job, but Head was incredible.”

“He trusts himself and doesn’t think he can get out. He keeps things simple and has the support of the coaches to play that way. It’s amazing what happens when that environment is created.”

Stuart Broad calls Travis Head an “incredible player” in all three formats.

“(He is) the most dangerous power play hitter there is. England knew they had to get rid of him. He doesn’t need 10 balls to get in.

“England have been below par with the bat, especially here when they get a little slippery, it’s a great place to play.

“He has such a natural ability to find the boundary. His biggest strength is the offside. England were hoping the spin would hold him down.

“I think his pace is his biggest strength and England have been pushing for Rashid to get him out.

“Labuschagne played his role as goalkeeper perfectly and did not panic. He simply adjusted to switching from fifth to first gear.”
