Eric Andre, the Emmy-nominated comedian from The Eric Andre Show, recently recounted a disturbing experience at Melbourne Airport. André described his discomfort in an Instagram video he posted on August 18, after a long trip that included stops in Los Angeles, Melbourne and Brisbane for a photo shoot.

He claimed that during his stopover in Melbourne, he was subjected to a thorough search by a dog and separated from the regular queue, which he believed resulted in racial profiling. André expressed his dissatisfaction with the procedure, calling it discriminatory. He described how he was removed from the regular queue and placed in a separate queue where the dog conducted a thorough search.

He believed the search was unfair and racially motivated and questioned its effectiveness. André issued a warning in his video to other travellers, particularly those who identify as black, brown or indigenous, urging them to be cautious when travelling through Melbourne Airport, especially when departing from Terminal 2 on Qantas International.

André recently posted a video about his disturbing experience with racial profiling at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in 2021. He felt he was treated unfairly and subjected to a rigorous screening process, so he filed a lawsuit. Now he’s asking his supporters to help him find out more about the police officers and the details of the dog sniffing procedures used at airports.

André is also seeking recommendations for discrimination lawyers in Australia. He wants to know how often people of color are subjected to these additional security checks compared to white travelers. This information is crucial to his legal efforts and to exposing unethical practices.

André has expressed concerns about using Melbourne Airport for future flights. In the event that he is employed in Australia, he has asked that arrangements be made so that he does not have to travel through Melbourne Airport alone. To avoid any problems, he recommended that he be given a police or security escort or allowed to travel to other cities such as Sydney or Brisbane.

André criticised Melbourne Airport’s security programme for racial discrimination

Eric André made it very clear in his message that he does not want to change his appearance or clothing in order to be treated fairly. He argued that the policies at Melbourne Airport do not actually make the airport safer and instead make him feel like an outsider.

André’s recent social media post stressed the importance of treating everyone equally and with respect, regardless of race or ethnicity. He shared a photo that sparked a strong reaction online. Melbourne Airport’s Instagram account immediately responded to André’s post, stating that they do not tolerate racism in any form.

His comments were intended to draw attention to what he saw as a serious problem with the program’s treatment of certain passengers.

Although Melbourne Airport has assured us that an investigation is underway, André’s concerns highlight the ongoing debate about the importance of fairness and respect in security practices at international airports. His call for change is part of a larger debate about how to ensure all travellers are treated equally and respectfully.
