Escaped inmate charged Thursday with home invasion and car theft – State’s first update

Delaware State Police are currently investigating a home invasion and robbery that occurred yesterday afternoon in Georgetown.

Officials said that on August 8, 2024, at approximately 3:30 p.m., police officers responded to a residence in the 21000 block of Zoar Road after receiving reports of a burglary.

Upon arrival, officers found that Lyndon King, a 36-year-old man who had recently escaped from the Sussex Community Corrections Center (SCCC), had forced his way into the home. King was still inside when the 69-year-old homeowner returned, police said. King confronted the homeowner, threatened her, shoved her and disabled the house phone by pulling it out of the wall so she could not call for help, according to police. He then stole her cellphone and fled the scene in the victim’s Chevrolet Trax.

After King left, the victim was able to flag down a passing vehicle and contact 9-1-1. Using electronic tracking, authorities were able to locate the stolen vehicle in Salisbury, Maryland. The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and Salisbury Police subsequently found both the vehicle and King near a Staples store on North Salisbury Boulevard. King was taken into custody without incident. The victim suffered no injuries during the ordeal.

King is currently being held in Maryland awaiting extradition to Delaware to face several charges, including first-degree robbery (aggravated felony), first-degree residential burglary (aggravated felony), terroristic threatening of a victim over 62 years of age (aggravated felony), theft of a motor vehicle (aggravated felony), willful interference with emergency calls, offensive touching, malicious damage to property, fleeing after conviction, and other related offenses.

The Delaware Department of Correction has confirmed that Lyndon King left a community service/work party that was on-site at SCCC earlier in the day.
