Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed a technical advisory and consulting contract with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (Shair and Partners).

With the contract, the two companies – Dar Al-Handasah is also a partner of the world-famous Zaha Hadid Architects – start planning and supporting a Mega Airport City Abusers In City of BishoftuCentral Ethiopia.

This ultra-modern airport city is located just 40 km from Addis Ababa Bole International Airportis expected to revolutionize air travel in Ethiopia. Once completed, the new airport will be able to handle 110 million passengers annually, four times the current capacity of Bole International Airport.

CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group Mesfin Tasew announced the Mega Airport City project and highlighted its role in establishing Ethiopia as a global aviation hub. With its exceptional capacity and world-class facilities, this new airport promises to add value to African aviation and strengthen partnerships, representing a significant advancement for the region’s air transport infrastructure.”

In its first phase, scheduled for completion in 2029, the airport city is expected to position Ethiopia as a leading global gateway to Africa. It will handle 60 million passengers in 2022, almost three times as many as Africa’s busiest airport, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. Ultimately, the new airport’s capacity will handle 110 million passengers per year, quadrupling the capacity of Bole International Airport.

The Mega airport city will have a 1.1 million square meter terminal, including passenger facilities, 126,190 m2 of airline facilities and over 100,000 m2 of cargo and airport support facilities. It will also include an associated airfield and other key airport infrastructure.

The new airport is located lower than the current main airport in Addis Ababa, which is located one of the highest places in the worldpresents unique Operational challenges for aircraft. The architectural team will incorporate elements of Ethiopian Heritage in the design of the new airport.
