As part of National Night Out, local police stations host street parties on the first Tuesday night in August each year, featuring music, barbecues, competitions, youth events and visits from emergency responders. San Francisco Bay Times team members enjoyed visiting the Night Out activities at the San Francisco Police Department’s (SFPD) Mission Station. The station’s district includes the Castro and adjacent neighborhoods.

We caught up with Lt. Christina Serrano of Mission Station: “National Night Out is an annual event that provides police officers with the opportunity to build and strengthen positive relationships with the community. The Mission Police Station held our event this year at the Mission Playground. It was an honor to have Mayor London Breed join us. Both police and community members had a great turnout.”

“We had different police vehicles that the kids could climb into and try out,” she added. “We had a DJ, a face painter, sports, games, raffles, food and more. The mission officers had the opportunity to play games with the kids and chat with the adults. I really look forward to this event every year. It’s a lot of fun.”

Our thanks go to Lt. Serrano and her colleagues for providing photos, information, and their attention as first responders to our community and their service.
