Ewers’ passes are “on point”: Texas gives Michigan its first loss since 2022

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – Top-10 opponents consistently bring out the best in Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.

On Saturday, Ewers delivered another road romp, throwing for 246 yards and three touchdowns as the Longhorns cruised past No. 10 Michigan 31-12 at the Big House.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Ewers is now the only FBS quarterback in the country to throw three touchdowns without an interception against multiple AP top-10 opponents since the start of last season; Ewers also led Texas to a win at Alabama last season.

“Quinn has something special about his demeanor. He’s a very calm guy. He’s really composed. He’s never emotionally agitated,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “When you have a quarterback that everyone can believe in, it builds confidence and belief that you can say, ‘Hey, let’s do our part because the guy who’s holding the ball every play is on point.'”

Ewers also performed well against the defending national champions, completing 24 of 36 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns as the third-ranked Longhorns moved the ball at will against a defense that boasts several projected NFL first-round draft picks.

Behind Ewers, the Longhorns converted seven of their first eight third down attempts. Ewers nearly converted the other attempt, but his 24-yard touchdown strike on the opening drive was negated by a holding call.

After missing a field goal on the first drive, Texas scored on its next four possessions, took control and went into halftime with a 24-3 lead.

“I just enjoy big moments,” said Ewers.

With the win, Texas took a big step toward returning to the playoffs after advancing there last year. The Longhorns lost to Washington in the Sugar Bowl semifinals, despite Ewers throwing for 318 yards in the 37-31 loss.

“I thought he played really efficiently,” Sarkisian said of Michigan’s performance. “He completed the balls. I didn’t feel like there was a forced shot today.”

The 19-point victory was Texas’ biggest road win against a top-10 opponent since 1979, when the Longhorns defeated Missouri 21-0. It was also the Wolverines’ first overall loss since losing to TCU in the 2022 College Football Playoff and first home loss since 2020.

“When we were in Alabama, we wanted to prove not only to ourselves but to everyone what kind of team we are,” he said. “To come here and get the job done … feels almost the same.”
