A single mother of three found that living in a hotel room in Connecticut was cheaper than renting an apartment.
Suzanne Hayes wrote an article for Business Insider on Monday describing her experience when she decided to book a room at the Avon Old Farms Hotel rather than continue looking for an apartment.
“I desperately searched Airbnb and Vrbo, but the few long-term options were already booked. As a last-ditch effort, I reached out to local hotels and asked about long-term rates. Then I received email number 2, only this one was from the Avon Old Farms Hotel and I felt like I had won the lottery,” Hayes wrote.
“We have a two-bedroom apartment on site that we rent for extended stays. It costs $2,200 per month and includes all utilities and hotel amenities,” the hotel said in an email.
Hayes received a 30-day notice from her landlord in March and has struggled to find a new place to live. Even before the notice, she was struggling to pay rent.
“However, I had a month-to-month lease and that brought with it a sense of unease. The house also contributed to my unease in other ways. The garden required endless work, the oil tank and heating were constantly malfunctioning and I don’t even want to start with the mice problem,” Hayes wrote.
She reported that she found two-bedroom apartments for $2,700 a month and three-bedroom apartments for up to $3,000 a month on Zillow. One of her applications was also rejected due to her poor credit.
Although she had concerns about moving into a hotel room, Hayes found that her children enjoyed the experience thanks to some of the hotel’s amenities, such as a pool and game room.
She also finally found some peace and quiet as the hotel offered a weekly cleaning and a continental breakfast.
“This is not an apartment I would have ever looked for, and it would not have occurred to me to consider a hotel for my housing needs. On paper, it is not the best choice for me and my children. But the amenities are the answer to my prayers. They have given me the gift of convenience, and that is, after all, exactly what I have been praying for,” Hayes concluded.
