Expanded service at Tweed New Haven Airport worries Looney

Expanded service at Tweed New Haven Airport worries Looney

This week’s announcement that passenger air traffic will soon be expanded at Tweed New Haven Airport is raising concerns among airport residents, including Connecticut Senate President Martin Looney.

In addition to Avelo, Breeze is a second airline offering commercial flights to Tweed. Together, they will soon serve 37 cities from New Haven, the Connecticut Airport Authority announced Tuesday.

Looney and others in the neighborhood did not expect such rapid expansion until a longer runway and terminal were built.

“Most people believed that there would be a significant increase in air traffic only when the new terminal in East Haven was completed,” he said.

Looney will use his position to put pressure on the Lamont administration to go ahead with the expansion.

“East Haven should receive all the incentives necessary from the state to make this possible,” he said.

Before Avelo launched its service in 2021, there were no commercial flights from Tweed for many years.

All flights land on a short runway on the New Haven side of the airport, which is located in a residential area.

The Connecticut Airport Authority has not yet responded to an email from WSHU seeking comment.
