FAA provides airports with 6 million for runway work and other improvements

Numerous airports across the country received good news from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA): The agency announced it would allocate $636.1 million to improve runways, taxiways and other infrastructure.

The funds, announced by the FAA on August 9, will provide 320 grants in 46 states and American Samoa.

Funding comes from the FAA’s long-standing Airport Improvement Program; other recently announced FAA grants come from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.

The largest single grant in this new round is $24.2 million for the rehabilitation of a runway at New York Stewart International in Newburgh, NY

Other major grants include $16.3 million to Philadelphia International Airport for runway improvements, $15.8 million to Willow Run Airport in Detroit for construction of a new taxiway, and $15 million to rehabilitate the runways at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport in Keahole on Hawaii Island.

Several other allocations went to block grant programs in Georgia, Illinois, Michigan and Texas. Under these programs, states distribute the funds they receive from the FAA to nonprimary commercial airports, auxiliary airports and general aviation airports.

Many of the grants go to infrastructure, particularly runways, taxiways, tarmacs and terminals. However, some also fund non-infrastructure purposes, such as updating master plans and purchasing firefighting and snow removal equipment.

Of the total of $636.1 million, $474.2 million, or about 75 percent, is FAA entitlement funds awarded according to a formula; the other 25 percent is FAA discretionary funds.
