Falcon golfers reach tie for second place with 206-219 win

Ethan Porreca shot a 1-over 37 on Monday afternoon to lead the visitors from Connellsville to a 206-219 road victory against Uniontown at the Uniontown Country Club.

The Falcons (5-2) moved into second place with the Red Raiders (5-1) in Section 2-AAA with a 4-1 record and one game remaining in the first half of the schedule. Belle Vernon (5-0) stands alone in first place.

Matt Firestone of Connellsville scored a solid 40. Derek Routzahn finished with 41. Hunter Konieczny (43) and Eli Armstrong (45) rounded out the scoring. Michael Roscart’s 46 did not count.

Trevor Uphold and Austin Thomas shared the scoring honors for Uniontown with 6 over 42. Colton Mathias shot 43, Brody Schiffbauer had 45 and Emily Myers came in at 47. Brayden Gmitters’ 55 was not used.

Belle Vernon 199, Albert Gallatin 236 – Jordan Mocello, Seth Tomalski and Jack Edwards all stayed under 40 in the Leopards’ Section 2-AAA road win over the Colonials at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

Belle Vernon remains undefeated and improves to 5-0 in the section and 7-0 overall. Albert Gallatin slips to 2-4 in the section and 3-4 overall.

Mocello won the medal with a 2-over 37. Tomalski shot 38 and Edwards finished with 39. Wyatt Lukas had 42 and Donny Croftcheck and Evan Mesco both finished with 43.

Mount Pleasant 207, Jeannette 256 – Ryan Karfelt shot a 37 to lead the Vikings to a home victory in Section 2-AA at Norvelt Golf Club.

Nico Pisula shot 39 and Aydan Gross finished with 40 for Mount Pleasant (4-1, 5-1).

Waynesburg Central 184, Brownsville 247 – The Raiders put in a strong performance at home on Rohanna’s Golf Course to earn a victory in Section 3-AA.

Chase Phillips led the Raiders (4-1, 6-1) with 33 points. Aidan Titus and Dom Benamati both scored 37 points. Joe Kirsch (39) and Rykan Gustafson (40) completed the scoring.

Benjamin Vojacek was the worst man for the Falcons at 39.

Charleroi 206, Elizabeth Forward 210 – The Cougars earned a big home win in Section 8-AA at Mon Valley Country Club.

Levi Large was the best golfer for the Cougars (5-1, 6-1) at 1-under 35. Jake Corrin finished with 40.

Aaron Didjunas of the Warriors won the medal with 2 under par and 34 strokes.

Laurel Highlands 206, ring gold 230 – Jacob Kalich had his round of the season at 3-under 33 in the Mustangs’ road win in Section 2-AAA at Rolling Green Golf Course.

Sevi Vecchiolla scored 41 points. Kayden Smith finished with 42 and Tyler Cook scored 43 points for Laurel Highlands (2-3, 2-4). Ryan Revak and Nico Harim both finished with 46.

Brice Kowall was the worst player for the Rams (0-5, 0-6) with 40 points. Evan Callaway (44), Evan Anderson (43), Trevor Benson (46) and Brandon Nguyen (57) rounded out the scoring.

McGuffey 189, Carmichaels 213 – The Highlanders remained undefeated in Section 3-AA with a road win at Carmichaels Golf Club.

Logan Crowe (35), Joel Sovich (39), Brody Wagner (35) and Josh Rusimisel (37) each scored under 40 points for McGuffey (6-0, 8-1). Vaughn Fleissner finished with 43 points.

Connor Lapana finished last for the Mikes (3-2, 3-3) with an even-par 37. Nathan Dursa finished with a 41. Zach Murphy, Aydan Bate, Eli Hastings and Jase Zdravecky all shot 45.

Yough 212 (playoff won), Geibel Catholic 212 – The Cougars won the playoff 19-21 and clinched a home victory in Section 8-AA at Madison Golf Club.

Seth Dolan won the medal for the Gators with 1 over 37. Mike Miller also played a solid round with 3 over 39. Aiden Holt (46), John Hess (43) and Gary Tarbuk (47) also contributed to the final result.

Landon O’Donnell was the lowest man for Yough with 39. Caden Doran, Anthony Bonari and Ian Toman all scored 43 and Nathaniel Bell finished the scoring round with 44.

Cross country running for boys

Connellsville 23, Southmoreland 36 – Jonah Lindstrom and Jake Pritts scored a one-two for the Falcons, securing an away win outside of the section against the Scotties.

Lindstrom’s winning time was 17:39. Pritts crossed the finish line after 18:46.

The next two runners were Selby Bell (20:27) and Dylan Bierhaus (21:21) from Southmoreland.

From the Falcons, Elijah Sayloer (21:44), Connor Dillon (21:52), Dane Pavlovich (22:43), Tucker Albert (22:55), Cory Stanton (23:24) and Jayden Kooser (24:05) completed the top 10.

Cross country running for girls

Connellsville 15, Southmoreland 50 – Lexi Ohler of the Lady Scots easily took first place in the non-section race with a winning time of 21:06.

Kaylea Voke from Mount Pleasant finished second with 24:10, Zoey Thomas from Connellsville finished third with 24:30

Abigail Zavatchan (25:28), Trinity Moore (29:47), Hannah Tinkey (31:16) and Breanna Groff (31:29) of the Lady Falcons completed the finish line.

Girls’ soccer

Connellsville 4, Hempfield 1 – Rylee Leasher scored all of Connellsville’s goals in the Lady Falcons’ non-league win at Hempfield.

Addy Bandemer set up the first goal of the game for Leasher at 36:11. Hayley Washington set up the second goal eight minutes later.

Hempfield’s Jiana Patterson cut the lead to one goal, but Leasher completed her first-half hat trick with a goal at 12:07.

Leasher scored an unassisted goal in the 31:33 minute of the second half.

Connellsville’s Sara Tinkey made six saves in the win. Hempfield goalkeeper Lila Clark made 13 saves.

The Lady Falcons improve their overall record to 2-0.

Waynesburg Central 2, Washington 1 – The Lady Raiders opened the season with a non-sectional win.

Bree Clutter and Rylei Rastoka each scored a goal and Rastoka assisted on Clutter’s goal.

Bentworth 4, Albert Gallatin 1 – The Lady Bearcats led 3-0 at halftime and recorded a comfortable away win outside of the section.

Brina Orsatti scored the decisive goal for Bentworth.

Brielle Dillon scored two goals and Megan Keturakis added another. Bella Moyer and Madelyn Johns assisted on two goals. Nita Anderson was the winning goalie.

“We got off to a fast start. Brielle scored the first goal within five minutes. We were able to create several chances,” said Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra. “We still have a lot of things to work on and improve, but now we can focus on the little things.”

Boys football

Bentworth 3, Trinity Christian 1 – Adam Moessner, Ryan Moessner and Andrew Vipperman each scored a goal in the Bearcats’ non-sectional win.

Ryan Moessner assisted on two goals and Gaige Davenport assisted on the other for Bentworth (2-0).

Girls volleyball

California 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Trojans returned home from Mapletown with a straight-set non-sectional win.

California won 25:21, 25:12 and 25:20.

Miranda Fox (6 kills), Treslee Weston (4 kills, 2 aces), Marley Seward (5 kills), Marley Shiflett (7 assists) and Leah Williamson (5 assists) were the statistical leaders for the Lady Maples.

Trinity 3, Frazier 0 – The Lady Commodores had a tough trip to Washington, suffering a non-sectional loss in three sets.

Trinity won with scores of 25–20, 25–22 and 25–16.

Addison Schultz finished with 7 service points and five blocks for Frazier (0-1). Allie Monack (8 kills), Gracen Hartman (11 assists) and Addison Hiles (11 digs) also had notable performances.

Girls tennis

Mount Pleasant 3, Greensburg CC 1 – The Lady Vikings won in doubles and singles to secure the home victory in Section 1-AA.

Dani Trainer and Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma took a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles match. Ella Alakson and Hannah Shawley took the second doubles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Ryleigh Drzal won her second singles match in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

Kiersten O’Connor’s third singles match was abandoned after two sets. She won the first set 6-3 and lost the second 6-4.
