Family Dollar store in Minnesota to close

Family Dollar store in Minnesota to close

27 August 2024

Family Dollar is closing the store it opened five years ago on South Minnesota Avenue.

The closure appears to be part of changes announced in March by parent company Dollar Tree Inc. to improve its profitability. The company said it would close 600 Family Dollar stores by early August and another 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next few years as their leases expire.

In South Dakota, stores in Beresford, Spearfish, Reliance and Lemmon were closed in the spring.

At the Minnesota Avenue store, all merchandise is marked 30 percent off except for alcohol and tobacco, which are 20 percent off, an employee said. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and the last day is Sept. 14, he said.

The store’s lease expires Sept. 30, and the company has indicated it will not be renewed, said Gregg Brown of NAI Sioux Falls, which is listing the space.

“It’s going to be a great space for a new tenant,” Brown said of the nearly 10,200-square-foot location with two loading docks. Family Dollar installed new HVAC and ceiling grid systems as well as LED lights when it moved in, he said.

“We’re hoping to find another retailer that can fill the space. … Traffic on Minnesota Avenue is great at 26,000 a day,” he said. “It’s a well-known intersection and a well-known landmark with Bagel Boy,” another tenant in the building.

The site’s proximity to university and hospital campuses makes it “a great location for a future retailer looking for a prominent location,” Brown said.

Family Dollar has two other stores in Sioux Falls at 421 W. Eighth St. and 2805 E. 10th St.
