Family says gunmen fired 60 to 70 shots at Burien home

A group of armed men opened fire on a single-family home in Burien, killing an 80-year-old grandmother after riddling the house with bullets.

Witnesses reported hearing more than 70 shots at the scene around 12 p.m.

As family members spoke to FOX 13 crews in Seattle on Wednesday afternoon, they cried over the loss of their grandmother.

They said they were at home at the time of the shooting and were still in shock after being attacked by a group of armed men in the middle of the night.

“I was lying in bed last night and heard some bangs. Then I went to the window and heard screaming,” said Saren Vann, a neighbor who got out of bed after hearing the shots.

Van said he heard one volley after another of bullets ripping through his neighbor’s house, shattering glass and exterior walls.

“Immediately after that, I heard screaming, grabbed my gun and jumped out the window in my underwear,” Vann said. “I saw my neighbor running down the street, called him back, made sure he got home safely, and then retreated into my house and called 911.”

Grieving family members in the affected house said they saved themselves by running for cover. They said there were 10 people in the house at the time.

“At about 12:17 a.m. my children ran into my bedroom yelling, ‘Daddy, daddy, daddy, shots fired. Shots fired,'” said another neighbor who wished to remain anonymous.

This neighbor said his 12-year-old heard the shots first and pulled his 7-year-old brother out of bed and onto the floor.

“They crawled into my room, kicked in the door and said, ‘Daddy, Dad, someone is shooting outside,'” he said.

He rushed to the scene of the accident with another neighbor to try to save her.

“We just applied pressure to the wound until we could reach 911,” he said.

He said he often waved to the 80-year-old and affectionately called her “Grandma.”

“She was a nice old lady. I saw her here a few times with her grandchildren,” he said.

The King County Sheriff’s Office said officers also attempted to resuscitate the woman after they arrived, but it was too late. Investigators have not specified how many shots were fired because the investigation is ongoing.

A witness told FOX 13 he saw four men dressed in black and gray running away after the shooting. Vann believes they came to the cul-de-sac on foot.

“They ran into the middle of the cul-de-sac and just let loose hellfire,” Vann said.

Residents say the area is normally quiet, but the violence took them completely by surprise.

“It’s just sad that someone lost their life,” Vann said.
