We all know that the ultimate goal in fantasy football is to — you guessed it — win. Whether it’s for a prize, to show off to your friends, or a combination of both, we play this game to win.
However, we also play not to lose, and by lose I mean to finish last. Honestly, there is nothing worse than a fantasy season that goes completely down the drain. Sometimes it is just unavoidable — we’ve all had bad luck with terrible injuries or terrible decisions. Sometimes it’s intentional when you’re trying to rebuild a dynasty or a team of keepers.
Whether you messed up your season on purpose or were unlucky, last-place penalties are becoming increasingly popular in fantasy football. Here are some ideas for any league looking to make last-place even worse.
Penalties for finishing last in the Fantasy Football League
Category 1: Public exposure
Coming in last is an embarrassment, so what better way to punish the last-place finisher in your league than to make them publicly embarrass themselves? You could have them sing a karaoke song chosen by the league in front of a packed bar. An even better idea would be to have them do a stand-up comedy routine. Maybe have them spend an evening with their league mates wearing an “I’m not a fantasy football fan” shirt. Maybe really humiliate the poor soul and put their name on the big screen at a sporting event so everyone in attendance knows how bad your friend is at fantasy football.
Street performances might even be an option. Put your buddy at a busy intersection with an instrument of your choice and he can’t leave until he’s raised $20 in donations. — which then go to the league champion.
Category 2: Physical exertion
Listen, we’re not going to send anyone to boot camp because they finished last in a fantasy league. – BBut maybe the loser of the league has to film himself doing a 40-yard dash or other NFL Combine drills. Eating challenges always play a role, and You’ve probably heard of the famous Waffle House punishment. But you could really poke fun at your league loser with some sort of spice challenge. Maybe they have to eat a certain amount of chicken wings with the hottest sauce your place offers. A Bhut Jolokia challenge could also be epic, as long as it doesn’t cause physical harm.
While I’m not a huge fan of lengthy punishments, silly hairstyles or embarrassing tattoos are a great way to keep everyone on task all year long.
Category 3: Accidental humiliation
Penalties for finishing last include making the loser do something they really don’t want to do. Maybe they have to retake their SAT or ACT, or maybe the NFL’s Wonderlic test.
Another option is to have the loser of the league cover the winner’s league fees for the following season. Want to make sure the winner’s miserable season is never forgotten? Then have the loser of the league buy a jersey of the player who cheated them the most. The punishment could also last until the next year’s draft, as the loser of the league ends up being the butler for the night, making sure all of your leaguemates have everything they need on draft day.
