Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning on Wednesday night to score Jackson Merrill as the San Diego Padres overcame a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Detroit Tigers 6-5.

Merrill started the inning on second base. After Elias Diaz grounded out and Mason McCoy saw a third strike, Luis Arraez was intentionally forced to walk. Tatis hit a 1-0 pitch from Jason Foley (3-5) into left field and Merrill scored.

Jeremiah Estrada (5-2) pitched a scoreless 10th inning to give San Diego (80-61) the win, moving the team a half-game ahead of Arizona and the first wild-card spot in the National League. San Diego also moved to within 4 1/2 games of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, who lost 10-1 at the Los Angeles Angels.

Tatis finished with two hits in his second game back from injury after missing more than two months with a stress reaction in his right leg. Another high-profile Padre, Yu Darvish, made it back to the mound for his first game in more than three months.

In his first start since May 29, Darvish showed good velocity but was unable to place his ball accurately. Matt Vierling hit him with a two-out solo home run in the first inning, his 16th of the year.

Detroit went up 2-0 in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Dillon Dingler and scored again in the third on Colt Keith’s RBI single to right with two outs. That eliminated Darvish after 2 2/3 innings and 63 pitches. He allowed four hits and three runs, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Trey Sweeney put the Tigers up 5-0 in the fourth inning with a massive two-run homer against Yuki Matsui, his second of the season. But starter Keider Montero couldn’t hold on to the lead, falling victim to two big swings.

In San Diego’s fourth inning, Merrill caught a fastball on the first pitch and drove it an estimated 372 feet into the left-center field seats for his 22nd home run with two runners on. One inning later, Manny Machado tied the game with a two-run single to left to make it 5-5.

Montero left the field after 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs. He allowed two walks and struck out two.

Detroit (70-70) fell 5 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the third wild card spot in the American League.
