Find your place in the Texan – The Daily Texan

Since 1900, The Daily Texan has been the heart of UT. We’ve had the privilege of covering breaking news, holding the powerful accountable and being the voice of our university community – all with the help of students like you.

We have a semester staff of over 300 people, 15 unique departments, and a reputation as the most awarded college newspaper in the country. This publication has done phenomenal work in the past, but our legacy does not mean we are finished.

Our mission at the Daily Texan is to better serve this campus every day. As our work and community evolve, we know that change in our newsroom starts with the voices we amplify. Every student on our campus has the right to see themselves reflected in our work.

It starts with you.

You don’t have to win a Pulitzer Prize to join the Texan (although 26 former staffers have won one). No journalistic experience is necessary. Whatever your skills or interests, you belong on our newsroom.

Those of you who are driven by the chance to make a difference can join my opinion team as a columnist or illustrator. There will be a diverse group of individuals driven by the opportunity to improve UT and advocate for their communities.

Keeping campus informed is an essential function of our newspaper, so if breaking news gives you an adrenaline rush, our news department offers you the opportunity to keep your fellow Longhorns informed. Or are you more interested in investigative journalism and working on longer-form news stories? Then the projects department may be just the thing for you.

If movies, literature and music are your life, or you enjoy writing about community members, you can write about your more artistic interests in the Life and Arts section.

Reporting from the sidelines. Covering all things Texas athletics. Getting up close and personal with Texas athletes. If you’re ready for any of these roles, consider applying to our athletic department.

If you never miss a comma, have good research skills, and are committed to AP style, come to the copy department and find out why it is considered the backbone of our newspaper.

News is more digital than ever and we have five multimedia departments to prove it. If you’re lost without a camera in hand, you can apply to our photo department to hone your photography skills and capture important moments behind the lens. Want to try new methods of digital storytelling? Our video and audio departments will help you train your journalistic eyes and ears.

The newsletter and social media sections are for people interested in connecting our work with the UT community. For those who want to make our work accessible to Spanish speakers, our translation department Texan en EspaNol, is waiting for your application.

We also have a more creative side. Put your illustration skills to good use by creating comic strips for our comics department. If you have an eye for design and are interested in creating flipbook spreads and other graphic elements to go with stories, our design team is the place for you.

Making our newsroom a welcoming place and making our content as respectful as possible is the main task of our Advocacy & Belonging department. Their team is suitable for anyone who is committed to balanced and fair reporting.

There is a place for you at the Daily Texan, no matter your background or experience. As editor in chief, I want our newsroom to be a place where every student is welcome. Apply to work at the Texan this fall. If you have any questions, read our application guide or email me at (email protected). If you can’t apply, subscribe to our daily newsletter, follow our work on social media or send us feedback on how we can improve.

This newsroom must be more than just a reflection of UT. Be part of the force that shapes it.

Henningsen is a senior studying English and advertising and is from Austin, Texas. She is the editor-in-chief.
