Fire at a SEPTA station on the 5th Street Market-Frankford line

Fire at a SEPTA station on the 5th Street Market-Frankford line

Commuters heading west on the Market Frankford Line from the 5th Street Station Thursday afternoon were greeted by smoke from a fire that shut down train and overhead rail service as several firefighters entered the area near Independence Hall.

At about 2:10 p.m., the Philadelphia Fire Department responded to a small fire caused by debris on the tracks’ power rail, SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch said. Initial reports indicated the cause of the fire may have been debris that caught fire, which Busch said is not too unusual.

“In this case, I don’t know for sure, but it’s almost always garbage of some kind,” he said.

Sometimes it’s as small as a piece of paper that catches fire. That’s why SEPTA does night cleanups.

No injuries to employees or drivers were reported.

According to Busch, SEPTA had to shut off power because of the fire on the tracks, but due to the way the power grid works, power supply between Spring Garden and 15th Street Station was affected.

The fire department reported that the fire was extinguished around 3 p.m. However, SEPTA had to inspect the track and give the all-clear so that service could resume.

Busch said shuttle buses would be available to passengers as an alternative until SEPTA gets the green light to resume service.
