Firefighters stop attic fire in Eagle Crest-area home caused by bathroom exhaust fan; fire marshal urges caution

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) – Firefighters quickly extinguished an attic fire in an Eagle Crest-area home Saturday morning that was traced to a mechanical failure of a bathroom exhaust fan, and warned residents to exercise caution.

Redmond Fire and Rescue crews were called around 7:30 a.m. to a possible structure fire in the 1400 block of Harrier Court, said fire marshal and spokesman Tom Mooney.

Arriving crews saw flames shooting through the roof, Mooney said. They quickly ran hoses inside and determined the fire had started in the attic above the master bathroom.

“An aggressive attack was made to extinguish the fire in the attic,” Mooney said in a news release. “The fire was brought under control, limiting fire damage to a small area.”

Redmond Fire & Rescue was assisted by Bend Fire & Rescue and the Cloverdale Rural Fire District.

Mooney said the cause of the fire was “a good reminder that it is a good idea to replace bathroom exhaust fans if they are making strange noises or are more than 10 years old. Exhaust fans should also be cleaned regularly to remove dust buildup.”
