JEFFERSON COUNTY- Extensive projects are currently underway to restore and revitalize three airports in the north of the country, including Watertown International.

According to the Governor’s Office, construction to complete several needed upgrades at the Watertown Airport will cost $32.5 million, with $28 million of that coming from the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition.

Once completed, the modernization measures will include a new terminal measuring over 2,000 m², which will include a new lobby, ticket sales and baggage claim areas, a jetway, expanded passenger waiting areas and a dedicated car rental counter area.

According to official information, the airport is outdated and currently does not have a jetway, so passengers have little protection from the elements when boarding and disembarking the aircraft.

Waiting areas are also cramped, so soldiers and other passengers are often forced to stay outside while they wait for their transport.

The current terminal will remain in operation until the new terminal, which will be built next to the existing building, is completed in summer 2025.

Upon completion, operations will be relocated to the new terminal and major renovations will begin on the old terminal building to add a new restaurant, offices and classroom/event space.
