FlightSim Development Group announces Kastelli Airport

FlightSim Development Group (FSDG) has announced that they are returning to the Greek islands with a brand new airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The airport in question is actually still in development in the real world too, meaning we won’t see a release for quite some time. That airport is Kastelli Airport (LGTL), which isn’t scheduled to open until 2027.

The airport originally served as a military base on the Greek island of Crete. With the growth of tourism in the region, Heraklion Airport came under increasing pressure to expand. However, the local government felt that converting Kastelli Airport into a commercial airport would be the best option. Construction is underway, but has experienced several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues. Operations were originally scheduled to begin in 2025, but the official website now says 2027.

FlightSim Development Group is creating a digital recreation of the airport in the meantime and will launch the airport product in parallel with the real-world opening. Whether they’re aiming for the “original” opening in 2025 or will wait until 2027 instead remains to be seen. Regardless, the trailer above gives us a little taste of what to expect.

Considering that the release could be three years away, this is a project that we will have to keep following to see how it develops over the next few years.
