Flooding and severe storms possible

Flooding and severe storms possible

A severe storm system is expected to impact the High Plains on Saturday, September 21, 2024, which could cause flooding and severe storms throughout the region.

A dynamic high-level low pressure system is currently located over Southern California Friday afternoon. This system will approach the High Plains Saturday afternoon and is expected to bring significant amounts of rain and even severe storms to the Southern Plains. The Storm Prediction Center has designated a LOW and LOW RISK zone for severe weather across the Southern Plains for Saturday afternoon and evening.

Severe Thunderstorms: Risks include damaging winds, hail and possible tornadoes. The threat of severe weather will be limited to southeastern New Mexico and far western Texas Saturday afternoon and evening. Semi-discrete supercells will be the likely storm shape from Clovis, NM south toward Hobbs and Odessa. These storms bring the greatest threat for large hail and brief tornadoes Saturday afternoon.

Heavy Rain: Up to 3 inches is possible in some areas. Some of this could fall in a short period of time, creating a risk of flooding in low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage. Heavy rain will be the main threat for the northern half of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. The storms will slowly dissipate Sunday morning as they move west to east.
