Florida man arrested for shooting down delivery drone

A man in Florida was arrested after allegedly firing a gun at a Walmart delivery drone.

Dennis Winn, 72, faced multiple charges after police discovered a bullet hole in the package carrying the drone.

According to local police, Mr. Winn admitted to firing one shot at the drone with a 9mm pistol from his residence in Clermont, west of Orlando.

“The Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint in the Clermont area that a Walmart delivery drone had been shot at,” the police department wrote in a post on Facebook.

“A bullet hole was discovered in the drone’s cargo. Witnesses identified the defendant, Dennis Winn, and led officers to his residence, the scene of the incident.”

He is accused of shooting at an aircraft, committing property damage and firing a firearm in public.

In police bodycam footage obtained by USA Today, Mr. Winn reportedly said he fired one shot at the drone.

“They say I scored, so I must be a good shooter, otherwise it’s not that far away,” he said. “I’ll have to find a really good defender.”

The Independent has asked Walmart for comment.

The shopping giant has completed over 20,000 drone deliveries since launching in certain areas of Arizona, Florida and Texas in 2022 through delivery company DroneUp.

The startup, which also partners with fast-food restaurants like Chick-fil-A and Wendy’s, is expected to roll out its autonomous service to even more locations in the coming months after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted approval for beyond-visual-line deliveries in the U.S.
