FM RedHawks secure playoff spot but are one game away from first place in West Division

WITH SEVEN GAMES LEFT IN THE REGULAR SEASON, THE FM REDHAWKS ARE IN THIRD PLACE IN THE WEST, ONE GAME BACK OF FIRST PLACE.

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR/FM REDHAWKS)–Colten Davis held the Sioux Falls Canaries to two runs and struck out four players in 5.2 innings pitched Sunday night to lead the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to a 9-2 victory at Newman Outdoor Field.

With their loss to the Kansas City Monarchs earlier in the day, the RedHawks (52-42) officially secured a spot in the American Association’s Miles Wolff Cup playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

Davis threw 87 pitches before giving way to Garrett Alexander, who threw 2.1 hitless innings to earn the win for the RedHawks.

After a 2-2 tie until the end of the sixth inning, the home team scored seven unanswered runs and took the series victory against the West Division leaders.

Juan Fernandez, Sam Dexter and Kona Quiggle each had two hits for the RedHawks and Ben Livorsi hit his first home run of the year. Dexter, Quiggle and Michael Hallquist each had two RBIs for Fargo-Moorhead.

Sunday was Honor Flight Day for the RedHawks, where the team’s special jerseys were auctioned off to support the Veterans Honor Flight of North Dakota and Minnesota.

To conclude the regular season, the RedHawks will now embark on a seven-game away trip to Kansas City and Kane County.

Entering the final week of the year, the RedHawks sit atop the AAPB West Division, half a game behind Winnipeg and Sioux Falls (both 51-41).

After Sunday’s win, manager Chris Coste revealed what he expects from his team as the regular season nears its final stretch.

“For us to get where we want to be, whether it’s in the division or winning the title, our hitters really have to stay as good as they have been in those six games,” Coste said. “That means we’re going to play the majority of pitchers, but we have to be able to beat the better pitchers in the league.”

The Redhawks will travel on the road for their next seven games: three against Kansas City beginning Tuesday, August 27, and four against Kane County.

The regular season ends on Monday, September 2nd.
