NEW CASTLE, Delaware, August 12, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Global dairy cooperative Fonterra and natural ingredients producer Superbrewed Food have joined forces to advance sustainable food production. The partnership combines Superbrewed’s biomass protein platform with Fonterra’s expertise in dairy processing, ingredients and applications to develop additional nutrient-dense, functional biomass proteins. The collaboration addresses increasing global demand for protein and reflects both companies’ commitment to delivering sustainably sourced, functional proteins that meet the needs of customers and consumers worldwide.

The collaboration builds on the launch of Superbrewed’s patented biomass protein, Postbiotic Cultured Protein. Postbiotic Cultured Protein is a non-GMO, allergen-free, nutrient-rich bacterial biomass protein that was recently given the green light by the FDA for the US market. In evaluating the ingredients, Fonterra found that the excellent function and nutritional value of Postbiotic Cultured Protein complements dairy ingredients in food applications with growing consumer demand.

In addition, Superbrewed has demonstrated that its non-GMO fermentation platform can be adapted to ferment other feedstocks. The goal of the multi-year joint effort is to develop new biomass protein solutions based on the fermentation of multiple feedstocks, including Fonterra’s lactose permeate, which is generated during milk processing. The goal is to add value to Fonterra’s lactose by converting it into high-quality, sustainable protein using Superbrewed’s technology.

Bryan Tracy, CEO of Superbrewed Food, specified, “We are delighted to partner with a company of Fonterra’s stature that recognises the value of bringing postbiotic cultured protein to market. This is a critical step in expanding our range of biomass ingredients that further contribute to sustainable food production.”

Chris Ireland, GM Innovation Partnerships commented, “Partnering with Superbrewed Foods is a fantastic opportunity. Their cutting-edge technology aligns with our mission to provide the world with sustainable nutrition solutions and respond to global demand for protein solutions to create more value from milk for our farmers.”
