For the first time since 1932: India makes history with victory against Bangladesh in Chennai




The Indian cricket team ended its 92-year wait by defeating Bangladesh in the first Test of the 2-match series in Chennai. The 280-run win for India at Chepauk made the team’s number of wins in the longest format of the game more than its number of defeats for the first time in history. India played its first-ever Test in 1932 under the leadership of CK Naidu but suffered a 158-run defeat. Since that match, India had never had more wins than defeats.

The win against Bangladesh was India’s 179th in Test history. The number of defeats was 178 in a total of 581 matches in the longest format.

The Indian team is not the only one whose number of Test wins exceeds the number of losses. Australia, England, South Africa and Pakistan are the other teams with a positive win-loss ratio.

Australia: Wins 414; Defeats 232

England: Wins 397; losses 325)

South Africa: Wins 179; losses 161

India: Wins 179; Defeats 178

Pakistan: Wins 148; Defeats 144

And on the play front, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin rounded off a memorable performance with six wickets as a dominant India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs on the fourth day of the opening Test to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series on Sunday.

Having set themselves an improbable target of 515, Bangladesh conceded 234 in the second innings, with centurion Ashwin (6/88) doing most of the damage in the first innings at his home ground in Chepauk, with Ravindra Jadeja taking 3/58.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored for Bangladesh with 82 from 127 balls.

The visitors were at 158/4 when play was suspended on the third day due to bad light.

India finished the second innings at 287 for 4, taking their overall lead to 514 thanks to hundreds from Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119).
