Forecast for Friday: Hot with nighttime thunderstorms

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – The big weather phenomenon to end the week will be heat, with highs in the 90s on Friday. There will be isolated thunderstorms later Friday night.

Take action:

  1. If you plan to spend extended periods of time outdoors in the heat at the end of the work week, make sure you stay hydrated.
  2. As of now, conditions are looking mostly dry for Friday afternoon/evening, but some areas may see showers/thunderstorms during all outdoor activities, including high school football games.
  3. Over the weekend, at least somewhere in northeast Kansas, it will rain almost the entire time. That’s not to say it will rain everywhere… there will be plenty of dry time in certain locations, too. Recent models show that the chance for widespread and heavier rain is higher on Sunday than on Saturday.

Tonight: A few scattered showers/thunderstorms, mainly before 9 p.m. before moving toward the Missouri border and into Missouri, otherwise mostly clear. Lows in the low 60s in north-central Kansas, mostly mid to high 60s. Winds S/NW around 5 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny. Maximum temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees. Wind direction northeast at 8 to 16 km/h. Due to the lower humidity, heat indices should be equal to or lower than the actual temperature in most areas.

Showers/storms develop on Friday night and continue through the weekend, with most of next week remaining dry. How warm it gets will depend on how much rain we get this weekend, but the general trend is for it to be cooler on Sunday, with highs mainly around 21 degrees Celsius, compared to 27 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Although dry weather is officially forecast for next week, a few isolated showers/thunderstorms cannot be ruled out occasionally. However, as the probability of these is low and not very high, it will remain dry for now, with temperatures close to normal for this time of year.
