Forest fire along the California-Nevada border near Reno destroys one home and threatens hundreds more

RENO, Nevada – About 200 firefighters battled a wildfire along the California-Nevada border on Monday that destroyed a home, temporarily closed Interstate 80 and continued to threaten hundreds of homes west of Reno.

No serious injuries were reported in the fire, which has burned about 200 hectares along the Truckee River since it broke out Sunday evening.

Emergency crews made significant progress in containing the fire’s spread overnight, and the highway connecting Reno to Sacramento and San Francisco was reopened.

Nevertheless, around 6,200 people were still without electricity and the fire service expressed concern on Monday about increasingly gusty winds that could hamper firefighting efforts on the ground and from the air into the evening.

Adam Mayberry, spokesman for the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, estimated that about 400 homes in the area were threatened “or could be threatened if the fire spreads.”

“That’s the real concern today. We have a red flag warning and I see an American flag flapping pretty heavily right now,” he said from near the fire lines on the outskirts of Verdi, a town 11 miles from downtown Reno.

The National Weather Service in Reno said wind gusts of up to 55 km/h were possible.

More firefighters were expected to arrive Monday evening, when a federal multi-agency team would take over. An emergency shelter and information center was set up at a local library, but Mayberry said the last he heard was that no evacuees were there.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Around 27,000 people were temporarily without power on Sunday evening, but Nevada Energy reported on Tuesday that all but 6,286 people had power restored.
