PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A former janitor at a Phoenix high school faces charges after police say he had sex with a 16-year-old student.
Oscar Joseph Sandoval was taken into custody last Thursday.
According to court documents, investigators said the victim, now 17, spoke to them on Sept. 3 and said she had a “friendly relationship” with Sandoval, who worked at Thunderbird High School.
During a football game, Sandoval helped the girl find a parking space, and while she was standing next to her car talking to him, Sandoval kissed her, court documents say.
Another time, Sandoval told the victim he wanted to show her an art tile in a room, so she followed him into a room. There, he rubbed her and touched her inappropriately.
The latest incident occurred when the two were in the school gym having sex, police said.
Last Thursday, the teenager chatted with Sandoval on Instagram, where he admitted to having sex with her at school and knowing she was underage, police said.
According to court documents, the last incident occurred between August 7, 2023, and December 21, 2023.
Police said they questioned Sandoval and he told them he started chatting with the girl when she was a sophomore and admitted to kissing her, then ended the interview.
Police suspected several serious crimes, but on Tuesday he was charged with one count of sexual intercourse with a minor.
The Glendale Union High School District confirmed that Sandoval was an employee of the high school and was later fired.
