Former Patriots center back ejected from game for brawl

Jack Jones is still struggling to stay on the field in his new home.

The Raiders cornerback was ejected from the season opener in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon for a brawl with Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer. You can watch video of the altercation here. Jones, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Patriots in 2022, didn’t even last two seasons in Foxborough before New England parted ways with him.

Jones was suspended at the end of his rookie season for rehab issues, arrested at Logan Airport the following spring for allegedly trying to bring weapons through the TSA, and fell out of favor with the coaching staff again in his second season after allegedly missing curfew. The Patriots decided to release him after the team’s trip to Germany last November, but Bill Belichick was tight-lipped about the circumstances at the time.

Q: So what was the reason for the decision to fire Jones?

Belichick: “I just felt it was time to move on.”

Q: Was the decision to part ways based on Jones’ performance or his behavior and leadership off the field?

Belichick: “I felt it was time to move on.”

Q: Did something happen in Germany that led to Jones’ dismissal?

Belichick: “No, not really.”

Q: Why now? Why was Jones fired this week after he was clearly in a precarious position over the past few weeks?

Belichick: “Yeah, I just felt like it was time.”

Q: How do the Patriots feel about the decision to recruit Jones? Did they miss something in the draft?

Belichick: “Jack is a talented player. He showed that at times when he played for us. At the end of the day, I felt like we just had to move on. But he’s a talented player.”
