“It was a frustrating debate, with moderators too often interjecting with ‘gotcha’ moments while refusing to pressure Harris.
It was a bizarre world. Ukraine has the right to territorial integrity, but our border is wide open. People are too poor to take a bus to another state for an abortion, but the economy is strong.
Most disturbing, however, were the counterfactual statements.
What would Putin do if Trump were president? He was, and Putin did nothing; Hamas did nothing while Trump was in office.
The trick is to give new businesses a $50,000 tax credit, even though 67% of them won’t survive the five years and even more would never qualify.
But more importantly, the moderators did not encourage Harris to wear her flip-flops.
There were times when Trump should have followed up on their obviously wrong answers and not fallen for things that happened years ago (I like when he says, “That’s old news,” but he’s been looking at it too long ago). From an economic perspective, I’m more concerned about government picking winners and losers, crowding out private capital, and ultimately dampening the animal spirits.”
