Frances Tiafoe will try to secure a place in a second US Open semi-final when the American plays Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the last four.
Two years after his biggest Grand Slam win to date on home soil, Tiafoe was back in fine form on the New York hard courts, surviving a five-set thriller against good friend Ben Shelton before beating Novak Djokovic’s conqueror Alexei Popyrin to reach this round. It’s been 21 years since Andy Roddick became the last American to win at Flushing Meadows and Tiafoe will be hoping to end that drought.
But he faces an extremely experienced opponent in the quarterfinals: the high-class Dimitrov, who has returned to almost his best form in the last twelve months. The Bulgarian has returned to the top ten in the world rankings after a 2024 year in which he also reached the final of the Miami Open and has an advantage over his opponent in a head-to-head comparison, having won three of the four meetings between the two.
In a week of unusually late starts, Tiafoe and Dimitrov entered the field before 9 p.m.

Tiafoe breaks Dimitrov
He managed a break for Dimitrov and was now leading the first set 3-2.
The 26-year-old played offensively and often got to the goal. In some cases, Dimitrov anticipated Tiafoe’s approach and offered him a lob, but in other cases, Dimitrov was forced to take risky shots along the line.

Dimitrov leads in the first games
Both men won on serve. The rallies didn’t last long and usually ended with one of them making an unforced error on the first few shots as they appeared to be still warming up.
So far, Dimitrov seems to be one step ahead of the young American, having accurately predicted when the latter will strike and where he will try to land a drop shot.
In a moment of glory, Tiafoe recovered from a long shot to his backhand with a lob. Dimitrov countered with an overhead slam to the American’s forehand and scored the winner.
Dimitrov is ahead in the first set by two games to one.

Dimitrov wins the first game
Dimitrov started strong. He opened with an ace on the first point. And another ace on the second.
The 33-year-old Bulgarian pushed Tiafoe largely on the defensive and won the first game with a killer shot that hit the outside of the right singles line.
The 26-year-old American will serve as the next…

Sabalenka is a force to be reckoned with in the quarterfinals
Sabalenka dominated from the baseline, striking with a power that Zheng could not reciprocate.
Meanwhile, the No. 7 seed was not only forced to play defensively and was pulled from one side of the court to the other, she also had problems with her first serve.
The Belarusian player is now one set ahead and currently has a 4-1 lead in the second set.

Nick Kyrgios makes an open offer to coach Coco Gauff after heartbreaking US Open final
On this particular occasion, Gauff struggled with her forehand, but her serve also failed her completely. She made 19 double faults and 11 in the final set, capping a difficult summer in which she lost the round of 16 in the last three major tournaments.
Since the loss, there have been calls for Gauff to replace her coach Brad Gilbert and look elsewhere – and there was an unlikely offer from Nick Kyrgios.

The 22-year-old destroyed Czech Tomas Machac in the fourth round to become the first British male quarter-finalist in New York since Andy Murray in 2016.
“To follow in Andy’s footsteps and reach the quarterfinals here since he did it in 2016 is a huge achievement for me,” he said after a 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 win. “I’m really, really proud of this achievement and hope I can do even more.”
