Frankie Capan III is getting closer and closer to his PGA Tour card and could secure it on Sunday.

The North Oaks native is currently tied for third place after three rounds of the Magnit Championship at Metedeconk National Golf Club in New Jersey. Capan shot a 4-under-par round of 68 on Saturday to move him to 13 under par for the tournament, just two strokes behind leaders Will Chandler and Max McGreevy.

A win on Sunday would officially secure Capan’s PGA Tour card for next season, but a top-two finish is likely possible as well. The top 30 finishers in the Korn Ferry Tour’s season standings at the end of the season qualify for promotion to the top professional tour. After this week, there are only four events left. The PGA Tour has already begun naming players as “Tour Bound” who are statistically certain to finish in the top 30 based on their total points.

Capan started the week 19th overall. His current third place finish would put him 13th for the season.

But Capan’s goals have long been higher than a top-30 finish. He wants to finish the season atop the standings. That would require at least two late-stage wins. Capan hasn’t achieved either of those yet — he’s had two top-five finishes — but Sunday will mark his third final-round appearance this season. He’ll tee off at 9:18 a.m. CDT on Sunday.
