Friday Night Lights: Lee’s Summit North beats Mill Valley in Missouri-Kansas duel

Friday night’s matchup between Lee’s Summit North and Mill Valley — the top two teams in the Kansas City metropolitan area’s high school football rankings — lived up to its promise… until one of the metro area’s top players won it.

Lee’s Summit North, No. 1 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, defeated No. 2 Mill Valley 26-13 in Shawnee. The Broncos led by just six points, 19-13, early in the fourth quarter. But star receiver Isaiah Mozee tiptoed down the sideline and caught a 23-yard pass that led to a game-winning touchdown two plays later.

Mozee took a pass in the flat field, found a gap on the right side and raced for a 20-yard touchdown and a 26-13 lead for Lee’s Summit North with 11 minutes, 52 seconds left in the game.

Mozee, who has committed to play for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in college, finished with nine catches for 106 yards.

Mill Valley, the five-time defending Kansas Class 5A champion, mounted a charge to advance to the 10-yard line with less than 6:30 left, but failed on fourth down at the 6.

Lee’s Summit North (3-0) built an early 17-0 lead. Senior running back Quade Chatmon ran 51 yards to set up a 2-yard touchdown in the first quarter, then scored another touchdown with an 8-yard run 10:25 before halftime.

Mill Valley got a little better in the running game as time ran out before halftime. Senior quarterback Connor Bohon scored a 25-yard touchdown to Blake Jay, making the score 17-7 at halftime.

Junior tailback Reggie Reece, who rushed for over 100 yards on the ground, sprinted for 24 yards early in the third quarter, setting up an 11-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone. Bohon found Isaac Sauder with 9:33 left and the score at 17-13.

After holding the Broncos at bay, the Jaguars were eventually forced to punt, with a bad snap leading to a safety and a 19-13 lead with 32 seconds left in the third quarter.

Lee’s Summit North hosts Arkansas powerhouse Bentonville next Friday, while Mill Valley hosts Free State.

Rockhurst 42, Olathe North 25

Rockhurst was dominant in the truest sense of the word.

The Hawklets, ranked No. 3 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, scored the game’s first 28 points, including three touchdowns in the first quarter. Rockhurst rushed for nearly 300 yards in the first half alone.

The meeting was the first between the two Kansas-based powers since 1999.

Junior running back Pierce Fisher accounted for two Rockhurst touchdowns with runs of eight and 22 yards, along with two touchdown passes, including an 87-yard pass from senior quarterback Charlie Loose to sophomore Blake Thomas, to make the score 28-0 with 6:39 left in the first half.

Olathe North was able to avoid a first-half clean sheet when Jamo Sarver and Sam Simmons connected on an 8-yard pass 21 seconds before halftime.

“I’m really pleased with the performance of our guys, especially offensively,” said Hawklets coach Kelly Donohoe. “We dropped a little defensively in the third quarter and we definitely have room for improvement, believe me, but we feel good about where we are after week three.”

Both teams scored a touchdown pass in the third quarter, but Rockhurst blocked the Eagles’ PAT and led 35-13 after three periods.

Olathe North scored two touchdowns in the final 12 minutes, but that was not enough to overcome a 28-point deficit.

The Hawklets (3-0) play again at home next week against Lee’s Summit West, while Olathe North (0-2) welcomes Lawrence in town next Friday.
