Friends travel a little “too demanding” on a small budget and end up in an unexpected place in the countryside

Friends travel a little “too demanding” on a small budget and end up in an unexpected place in the countryside

A video of two travelers stumbling upon a tiny “self-service grocery store” in a remote town in Iceland has gone viral on TikTok.

The clip, posted by user @_kristinarose, has garnered more than 1.2 million views since its release on August 27.

The text above the video reads: “If you save a little too much while traveling, you’ll end up in a rural town with no restaurants or grocery stores.” According to the location shared with the post, the video was shot in the western region of Iceland.

The footage shows two women walking down an empty street against a backdrop of mountains. They soon reach a “grocery store” the size of a phone booth.

“We found the grocery store in town,” a woman says in the video, adding, “It’s a self-service store. These are the only groceries we can get.” The women open the door of the booth and the camera pans across a shelf, showing bags of tomatoes and a few other items. In the comments section of the video, the author writes that the store also has “dried fish fingers.”

The caption of the video states: “We ended up making oatmeal for dinner using our camping stove and packets of oatmeal we brought from home.”

Newsweek reached out to @_kristinarose via TikTok for comment. This video has not been independently verified.

The viral post comes at a time when travel is set to hit record highs this year, with global spending on tourism expected to reach $2 trillion, driven by demand for leisure activities, market research firm Euromonitor International found in a survey conducted in December.

The survey found that niche segments in tourism – such as adventure, wellness, luxury, ecotourism and sports travel – will be the biggest growth areas in 2024 as consumers prioritize personalized experiences that fit their lifestyle and values.

In a comment, the poster wrote: “We couldn’t believe how this was listed on Google Maps. We were expecting a small shop but didn’t expect it to be like this.”

The poster said they “did not buy anything (at the self-service grocery store) because we were not sure how it worked and if it was only for locals,” and continued: “We did not want to take the food with us in case the locals needed it.”

In further comments, the author clarified that they had just arrived in the country for their vacation and were unable to stock up on food before heading to the rural area. “So this is all we could find in this area.” The next day, the women were able to purchase food at another grocery store.

‘This is wild’

The viral clip surprised and amused users on TikTok. One wrote: “This is so cool. I want to see the world.”

Another added: “This is so cool, you are blessed but not blessed anyway. Safe travels queens.”

“This is seriously so funny,” wrote one user, while another said, “THIS IS WILD BUT ALSO SOMETIMES FUNNY.”

One commenter added: “It’s so cute and by cute I mean tiny.”
