SYRACUSE NY (WSYR-TV) — A food truck at the New York State Fair this year is serving up more than just tasty and meaty grilled cheese. The Massachusetts-based food truck is turning comfort food into preservatives.
By purchasing a sandwich from Bees and Thank You you can help counteract the decline of honey bees.
“From day one, we didn’t want to sell food, we wanted to have a mission behind what we do. It’s been that way from the beginning. It’s been about family and educating the kids. We really want to teach the importance of pollinators,” said Nick Laorenza, co-owner of Bees and Thank You.

With an active plan, they always involve and educate as many people as possible.
“We go out a few times a year and educate the kids about bees. We also do ‘seeds for the bees.’ We have little packets of pollinator seeds that we hand out at all the events we go to. They are native pollinator seeds that you can plant in your garden,” Laorenza said.
Laorenza says people don’t realize how important bees are, because 75 percent of our food depends on pollination.
“We actually lose 40 to 60 percent of all bee colonies every year. Without bees, humanity would become extinct in five to 10 years at most,” said Laorenza.
About 10 years ago, Laorenza traveled all the way from Boston to the fair – and made sure her food truck stopped by as well.
“The energy here is really good. People have been talking about the truck. A lot of people are coming back and we have some repeat visitors to the show. I think we’re really welcomed here and people are trying it out and are excited,” said Laorenza.
A simple sandwich that brings a powerful change.
