Politicians, celebrities and spectators alike came well dressed to the Democratic Party Convention this week.

While the DNC, which takes place August 19-22 at Chicago’s United Center, is not a suitable place to research fashion trends, there have already been more than a few genuine fashion moments that make a compelling argument for fashion’s place on the political stage.

The most viral fashion moment, of course, came from Vice President Kamala Harris herself, who is set to become the official Democratic presidential nominee this week. Harris took the stage on Tuesday, the second night of the convention, in a stunning two-piece tan suit by Chloé, consisting of a tailored double-breasted jacket and ankle-length pants, both made from woolgrain de poudre and detailed with gold-tone details.

The trousers in particular, with their slightly oversized, boyish silhouette, are a departure from the understated straight trousers we usually see on female politicians. And the best part? The light brown shade on the Chloé website is aptly called Coconut Brown. Now That is a hidden meaning.

Later Tuesday night, Michelle Obama took the stage with her husband and former President Barack Obama to officially endorse Harris for president. Although she had a tough task on her hands, she did not disappoint, addressing the crowd in a navy tailored pantsuit by New York luxury label Monse. The fashionable ensemble, consisting of an innovative criss-cross jacket and turn-up tuxedo pants, added a playful touch to a look that can easily drift into drab office wear.

Meanwhile, Ella Emhoff, daughter of First Man candidate Doug Emhoff, supported her parents in a stunning plaid suit by Thom Browne (accessorized with the Harris-Walz camouflage hat). And attorney Angela Alsobrooks, a longtime Harris protégé, took the podium in a white two-piece consisting of a knee-length pencil skirt and a tailored blazer with gold-tone hardware.
