Fundraising for the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Tree and Shrub Sale

Fundraising for the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Tree and Shrub Sale

Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed program is hosting its fifth annual native tree and shrub sale this fall as a fundraiser to support watershed activities and promote healthy watersheds.

Scientists have found that trees are good for the environment, providing shelter for birds, insects and other wildlife, reducing storm runoff, filtering pollutants and reducing soil erosion.

Whether for landscaping, shade, or environmental protection, this is an excellent opportunity to order a Pennsylvania native tree or shrub through the Master Watershed Program.

The Steward Program will accept orders through August 28. All trees and shrubs must be pre-ordered online or by phone. One-day curbside pickups are scheduled at 27 locations across the state in September or October.

Curbside pickup in Allegheny County is scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the South Park Skating Rink: 300 Corrigan Dr, Bethel Park, PA 15102

There are 18 varieties of native trees and shrubs for sale. Details about the trees, such as flowering time, height, sun and soil moisture requirements, are listed on the ordering website.

Order forms and relevant information can be found on the Penn State Extension website at https://extension.psu.edu/mws-tree-sale.

Master Watershed Stewards guarantee healthy trees and shrubs at distribution. They are sold in 1-gallon containers for $20, 2-gallon containers for $30, or 3-gallon containers for $40. Due to variations in planting, care, and site conditions, no refunds are available after trees are picked up.

In addition to Allegheny County, additional pickup locations are located in the following counties: Adams, Berks, Bradford, Bucks, Centre, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Erie, Franklin, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lycoming, McKean, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Schuylkill, Susquehanna, Warren, Wayne, Westmoreland, Wyoming and York.

Residents are urged to consider their above and below ground utilities and to consider the size of the mature growth when selecting a tree for their property. Master Watershed Stewards recommend always calling 811 before digging.
