Gahanna-Lincoln High School students went home early Tuesday after a construction crew from a nearby construction site damaged a gas line.

Mifflin Township Fire Chief Brian Dunlevy said the Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools district is building a new high school directly behind the current school building at 140 Hamilton Road.

The construction company had destroyed a five-centimeter-thick gas pipe leading into the building, forcing the fire department to evacuate the area, including the school building.

Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools posted an advisory on social media and sent a message to parents saying that students on buses would be sent home and students already in the building would be dismissed.

The district announced the closure on social media at about 8:35 a.m., 15 minutes after warning parents that middle school buses might be delayed due to a road closure caused by a gas leak.

Dunlevy said Columbia Gas arrived and shut off the gas line. There is currently no danger to the public. Havens Corner Road next to the high school was closed briefly but has reopened.
