COLUMBIA – South Carolina’s 31-6 win over Kentucky on Saturday caused a stir and continues to do so.

ESPN’s flagship college football show, “College GameDay,” is returning to Columbia for the first time in a decade, the network announced Saturday. The show will focus on the Gamecocks’ noon game against No. 18 LSU next week.

It is the eighth time USC has hosted the show and the first since September 27, 2014. That was the infamous “Kenny Chesney Game,” in which country superstar Kenny Chesney was chosen as a guest player despite numerous protests from USC fans, as he rightly claimed to have no connection to the university.

ESPN countered that there is no rule that says the tipster has to be affiliated with the school, although that has almost always been the case. Chesney showed up for the show and for USC’s game against Missouri that day. The Gamecocks blew a 20-7 lead with less than eight minutes left and lost. USC finished coach Steve Spurrier’s final full season at 7-6, blowing two more fourth-quarter leads during the year.

This brought the Gamecocks’ record in games with “GameDay” down to 2-4.

In their past performances, the show was broadcast from Williams-Brice Stadium and the Horseshoe.
