A woman was injured in a gas explosion at a fish and chip shop on Kangaroo Island, emergency services said.

More than two dozen Country Fire Service (CFS) crews and paramedics attended the scene of the accident on North Terrace in Penneshaw.

The CFS said the front of the store was destroyed by the explosion, which was reported to emergency services shortly after 5pm.

The SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) said a woman aged between 35 and 40 suffered burns to her face, hands and thighs.

SAAS said the woman was conscious and breathing and the incident was being treated as an occupational accident.

Around 25 firefighters were on site and brought the flames under control. Fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause.

The fish and chip shop is located next to a youth hostel and initial estimates put the damage at tens of thousands of dollars.
