Gasoline prices in British Columbia fell last week as a new study suggests relief is in sight in one of Canada’s most expensive fuel regions.

The CD Howe Institute found that Lower Mainland residents will benefit from the newly expanded Trans Mountain pipeline. The long-delayed project began operations on May 1, increasing capacity from 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000 barrels per day.

CD Howe Fellow-in-Residence G. Kent Fellows says greater gasoline and diesel flow through the pipeline will mean less reliance on more expensive rail. By his calculations, bottlenecks on Trans Mountain before the expansion have cost British Columbians $1.5 billion a year since 2015.

The national average price of regular gasoline was little changed between August 8 and 15, according to data from Kalibrate. The largest price drops were in Kelowna, BC and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, while the largest price increases were in Peterborough and Kingston, Ontario.
