ATLANTA – Gasoline prices have dropped significantly in the Atlanta metropolitan area, providing drivers with much-needed relief ahead of the approaching Labor Day weekend.
According to a recent survey by GasBuddy, the average price of gasoline in the Atlanta area has fallen 8.2 cents per gallon over the past week and is currently at $3.13 per gallon. This decline continues a trend of falling prices. In Atlanta, gas prices are now 24.0 cents lower than they were a month ago and a whopping 43.8 cents lower than the same time last year.
Gas prices in Atlanta vary widely. The cheapest gas station yesterday offered gas for $2.71 per gallon, while the most expensive gas station charged $3.99 per gallon – a difference of $1.28. Nationwide, the lowest price yesterday was $2.49 per gallon, while the highest price was Atlanta’s highest price of $3.99 per gallon.
The average price of gasoline is also declining nationwide, falling 6.2 cents per gallon last week to an average of $3.30 per gallon. That national average is now 20.7 cents lower than it was a month ago and 49.2 cents lower than it was a year ago. The national average price of diesel, meanwhile, has hit a multi-year low, falling 3.2 cents last week to $3.67 per gallon.
Looking back at historical prices, this year’s averages show a significant decline from previous years. On August 26 of last year, the average price in Atlanta was $3.42 per gallon, while the national average was $3.84 per gallon. For comparison, the average price on the same day in 2021 was $2.97 in Atlanta and $3.14 nationally.

Gasoline prices have also dropped in neighboring areas. In Georgia, the average price is $3.10 per gallon, in Chattanooga it is $2.75 per gallon, and in Macon it is $3.00 per gallon.
GasBuddy’s Labor Day travel forecast, released tomorrow, should provide further insight into how much Americans will save on their road trips compared to last year.
