The top tier of the US LBM Coaches Poll remains largely unchanged after Week 4 of college football this week. That likely won’t be the case next week, as the first meeting of the top five teams of the season looms.

Georgia remains No. 1, receiving 35 of 55 first-place finishes cast this week. The Bulldogs had a free date to prepare for next week’s trip to No. 4 Alabama, which also was unable to play over the weekend. No. 2 Texas, which easily defeated UL-Monroe on Saturday, closes the gap a little further, receiving 18 first-place finishes. The remaining two first-place finishes went to No. 3 Ohio State, which opens Big Ten competition next week at Michigan State.

Mississippi remains at No. 5, while Tennessee moves just ahead of Oregon at No. 6, giving the SEC five of the top six teams in the poll this week. The news wasn’t all good for the league, though, as Missouri slipped from a tied eighth place to No. 11 after needing an overtime win to escape Vanderbilt. Penn State, Miami (Florida) and Utah now round out the top 10.

Michigan made the biggest gain of the week in the rankings, moving up five spots to No. 12 after sweeping Southern California and knocking the Trojans down four spots to No. 16.

Kansas State drops 11 spots to No. 25 after a night of beatings at Brigham Young, moving up the rankings to No. 22. Illinois, No. 21, also climbs into the rankings after beating Nebraska in overtime on Friday night.

The Cornhuskers and Memphis are the dropouts of the week.
